Brilliant! Thank you for this. I’m adding it to the Favorites on NoCon2010. Great video!

@billtvmacon Thanks Bill! It was a quicky, but it’s one of those simple things that work very well.

wow, huge difference. I might have to get one myself. Thank you!

I’ve used my regular tripod like this. It’s just an inexpensive lightweight one. I really like the unique look you get from doing this. It almost looks like you are being filmed with a steady-cam. Good video!

    Monopods rule!

I’ve been working on a project where I add some counterweights and a gimbal to my monopod, essentially turning it into a steadicam-type thing.

Those monopods are actually very good !

This is such a great Idea. My tripod can actually tilt att the top already. Never thought of doing this though! Thankyou.
You should make more videos, like this. I’d love to see more from you!

@MattGambellKnowsBest Thanks! And it does work quite well with a lightweight tripod, you just tape or tie the legs together so they don’t flop around.

  9. ve2vfd says:

@YTnewsweek Yes! I’ve been doing still photography forever and use the monopod a lot to stabilize long lenses. It works quite well for video to film yourself and as a poor-mans steadycam.

  10. ve2vfd says:

@tiffismyname Thats a pretty darn good idea! I’ve been using my monopod as-is as a poor mans steadycam and it improves stability a lot, but it’s not perfect. There are some left to right swaying issues. (I had a clip about that originally but I edited it out to keep my vid under 4 minutes)

@FenderGibsonWashburn Thanks! I agree it gives you a very good look. On the Discovery Channel, Les Stroud has self-filmed an entire series on wilderness survival using the monopod method… I figured if it’s good enough for the discovery channel it’s good enough for us! =D

@OfficialBenP Thanks! It’s really worth having a monopod, but as mentioned you can also try it out using a lightweight tripod by taping the legs together. It’s obviously not as light and simple as a monopod but it works quite well.
